Superbowl to feature Aerial Display!
And no, we’re not talking about the passing prowess of Eli Manning and Tom Brady — we’re talking about the onslaught of private jets about to descend upon Phoenix.
According to a New York Times article today: “As of Friday, about 400 private jets had already made arrangements to fly in. Private-jet schedulers say that this is the most ever, and that an epic traffic jam could ensue in the skies.” Later in the article, it mentions that one of two major private air operations at Sky Harbor, Swift Aviation, had already booked 490 arrivals and departures.
The irony of this situation is that the glut of private jets is going to cause some delays in these folks getting out after the game is over, and delays are a major reason many people choose fractional jet ownership over flying commercial. Many of these planes are scheduled to leave at the same time, causing fractional jet operators like Netjets to look at setting up special departure lounges.
“To prepare for the biggest traffic jam — Sunday night, when all those private jets try to depart at once — NetJets, Swift Aviation and several others are planning to set up reception centers and lounges to entertain private-jet passengers experiencing long waits. “We already know we’ll get a whole bunch of people arriving at once, and it will take some time to get those airplanes out,” she (Marlene Purswell, senior vice president for operations at LegFind.com) said.
Hmmm, it might make some of these folks long for the day when private air travel was a bit more exclusive.
