Imagine being one of American Airlines’ passengers during these past couple of days when they have canceled more than 2,000 flights due to technical compliance issues. While we tip our hat to AA for making a hard call and putting safety compliance above all other concerns, it should have never gotten to this point.

Most fractional jet programs are required to operate under the FAA’s “Part 135,” which, generally speaking, applies to those planes available on demand, serving nine passengers or less, with single pilots. There are a series of circumstances that allow some fractional programs to operate under the FAA’s “Part 91,” which is less restrictive.

As I look at all of the options that are available in fractional jet ownership, I’ve been focusing mainly on questions of pricing, service area and quality of service.
